How To Identify Raccoon Problems

Raccoon Description
Raccoons can easily be identified by their black mask, narrow nose and distinct ringtails. Raccoons are common throughout all parts of the U.S. Raccoons tend to be quiet, with the exception of high pitched squeals and growls of aggression when threatened. Baby raccoons often sound like birds and homeowners often mistake those sounds when reporting noises in the chimney, walls, or attic. Nocturnal by nature, raccoons are rarely seen during the day, except for female raccoons in spring, as they often take brief breaks from their litter to rest.

Raccoon Habitats
Raccoon habitats include shelter in dens, trees or logs during the day. In urban areas, raccoon problems occur in residences, abandoned buildings, attics, cellars and chimneys. Raccoon damage is a concern for any homeowner that encounters a raccoon problem.

Raccoon Entry
Raccoons will gain access to homes when in need of shelter or protection, generally causing damage upon entry. Raccoon problems also occur when they invade a premise in search of food. Raccoons feeding in garbage cans and in gardens are common complaints within suburban areas.

What To Do Before A Raccoon Specialist Arrives

Raccoon Control and Safety
Wild raccoons can be surprisingly aggressive and dangerous. Mothers are extremely protective of their young and will defend her litter if she feels threatened. Raccoon safety should not be taken lightly. They are known to carry a variety of parasites and diseases that can be transmitted to pets and humans. Common diseases include roundworm, rabies, and parvovirus.

Raccoon Damage
Raccoons will dig up the ground looking for worms, and grubs, causing damage to lawns. Raccoons invade homes often in the winter and spring, most commonly inside attics, to escape the cold or to nest and raise their young. Raccoons are strong animals and can damage the shingles, fascia board, soffits and vents of structures they enter. Common raccoon damage within attics includes damage to the insulation from feces/urine, damage to the ductwork or wiring, staining of drywall from urine, and water damage at the entry point.

Raccoon Problem Prevention and Repair
Upon raccoon removal, a Critter Control raccoon expert will assess any damage to your home and identify other potential raccoon entry points.
